Movies And Television Shows Which Shine A Spotlight On Essex

If you’ve visited Essex, already call Essex home, or are simply familiar with the county and its diverse and luscious landscapes, then you will know that the proximity to London combined with the stretches of countryside and the quaint villages alongside vast towns, make Essex somewhat of a unique and exciting place to live.

But the interest in Essex does not begin and end in the office of our estate agents in Harold Wood and across other parts of Essex. In fact, Essex has attracted the attention of multiple industries – including the television and film industry which often uses Essex as the backdrop for many top and popular hits.

Here are some of our favourites.

The Essex Serpent

A big-budget Apple TV production that was filmed during the lockdown in the most rural parts of Essex, including areas along the Dengie and towards Maldon, The Essex Serpent starred Tom Hiddleston and Claire Danes and offered a look back at Victorian Essex when science and religion were starting to lock horns in their beliefs and understandings.

The Essex that is depicted throughout this series is one of otherworldliness, with the marshes in particular playing a role in both setting the scene and pushing forward the storyline.

The Crown

Different scenes from The Crown have been filmed in and around Essex over the years, however the most recent saw scenes from the upcoming sixth and final series being filmed in the centre of Southend during the particularly cold spell in December 2022.

Indiana Jones And The Last Crusade

Despite always presenting the illusion of being somewhere exotic and exciting, many of the scenes in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade were filmed in Essex – specifically in Tilbury Docks which were reimagined to present the look and feel of Venice.

The Dark Knight Rises

If you know much about movies and how television shows are created, you will know that one airport or industrial centre can be adapted on the screen to suit pretty much anywhere in the world – which is exactly what happened to Stansted airport for The Dark Knight Rises. The Stansted airport was turned into Gotham’s own airport for the 2012 movie, putting Essex on the map big time in Hollywood.

The Woman In Black

In a similar vein to The Essex Serpent, The Woman in Black chose to film in Essex – specifically on Osea Island – due to the creepy and chilling marshes which allow for a sense of isolation and complete detachment from nearby towns and villages. This is, of course, what the producers of The Woman in Black wanted, with the Blackwater Estuary presenting the ideal backdrop for this modern horror movie.

With so many destinations around Essex making their mark on the big and the small screen, it is little wonder why Essex has become popular with buyers from all walks of life. Let us help you find the setting for your story in Essex, by getting in touch directly.
